Picklescan: ZIP archive scan bypass is possible through non-exhaustive Cyclic Redundancy Check

CVE-2025-10156GHSA-mjqp-26hc-grxg

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (picklescan 0.0.31), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary Picklescan's ability to scan ZIP archives for malicious pickle files is compromised when the archive contains a file with a bad Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC). Instead of attempting to scan the files within the archive, whatever the CRC is, Picklescan fails in error and returns no results. This allows attackers to potentially hide malicious pickle payloads within ZIP archives that PyTorch might still be able to load (as PyTorch often disables CRC checks). Details Picklescan likely utilizes Python's built-in zipfile module to handle ZIP archives. When zipfile encounters a file within an archive that has a mismatch between the declared CRC and the calculated CRC, it can raise an exception (e.g., BadZipFile or a related error). It appears that Picklescan does not try to scan the files whatever the CRC is. This behavior contrasts with PyTorch's model loading capabilities, which in many cases might bypass CRC checks for ZIP archives - whatever the configuration is. This discrepancy…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2025-10156

Advisory: Picklescan: ZIP archive scan bypass is possible through non-exhaustive Cyclic Redundancy Check
IDs: CVE-2025-10156, GHSA-mjqp-26hc-grxg
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2025-10156 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:44 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: picklescan 0.0.31. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI picklescan: affected <= 0.0.30; fixed in 0.0.31

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show picklescan`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on picklescan.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
