Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

A vulnerability was found in MicroPython 1.23.0. It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function mpvfsumount of the file extmod/vfs.c of the component VFS Unmount Handler. The manipulation leads to heap-based buffer overflow. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploit has been disclosed to the public and may be used. The name of the patch is 29943546343c92334e8518695a11fc0e2ceea68b. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue. In the VFS unmount process, the comparison between the mounted path string and the unmount requested string is based solely on the length of the unmount string, which can lead to a heap buffer overflow read.

## Affected components
- PyPI micropython-string: affected <= 0.1
- PyPI micropython-os-path: affected <= 0.1.3
- PyPI micropython-copy: affected <= 3.3.3.post3
- PyPI micropython-io: affected <= 0.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show micropython-string`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.
- `python -m pip show micropython-os-path`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.
- `python -m pip show micropython-copy`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.
- `python -m pip show micropython-io`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on micropython-string, micropython-os-path, micropython-copy, micropython-io.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
