Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
A vulnerability in open-webui/open-webui version 0.3.8 allows an attacker with a user-level account to perform a session fixation attack. The session cookie for all users is set with the default SameSite=Lax and does not have the Secure flag enabled, allowing the session cookie to be sent over HTTP to a cross-origin domain. An attacker can exploit this by embedding a malicious markdown image in a chat, which, when viewed by an administrator, sends the admin's session cookie to the attacker's server. This can lead to a stealthy administrator account takeover, potentially resulting in remote code execution (RCE) due to the elevated privileges of administrator accounts.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-7053 Advisory: Open WebUI Vulnerable to a Session Fixation Attack IDs: CVE-2024-7053, GHSA-43g4-487m-5q6m Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-7053 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:31 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.6) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI open-webui: affected <= 0.3.8 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show open-webui`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on open-webui. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-43g4-487m-5q6m (OSV record GHSA-43g4-487m-5q6m lists affected ranges: PyPI open-webui >=0 <=0.3.8) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-43g4-487m-5q6m (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-43g4-487m-5q6m lists affected ranges: PyPI open-webui >=0 <=0.3.8) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
