SurrealDB has an Uncaught Exception Handling Nonexistent Role
CVE-2024-58358GHSA-jc55-246c-r88f
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (surrealdb 2.1.0; surrealdb-core 2.1.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Roles for system users are stored as generic Ident values and converted as strings and into the Role enum whenever IAM operations are to be performed that require processing the user roles. This conversion expects those identifiers to only contain the values owner, editor and viewer and will return an error otherwise. However, the unwrap() method would be called on this result when implementing std::convert::From<&Ident for Role, which would result in a panic where a nonexistent role was used. Impact A privileged user with the owner role at any level in SurrealDB would be able to define a user with DEFINE USER with an nonexistent role, which would panic when being converted to a Role enum in order to perform certain IAM operations with that user. These operations included signing in with the user. This would crash the server, leading to denial of service. Patches Unexistent roles are no longer accepted during parsing when defining a user. Even when successfully associated with a…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-58358 Advisory: SurrealDB has an Uncaught Exception Handling Nonexistent Role IDs: CVE-2024-58358, GHSA-jc55-246c-r88f Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-58358 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:43 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 4.9) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: surrealdb 2.1.0; surrealdb-core 2.1.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io surrealdb: affected < 2.1.0; fixed in 2.1.0 - crates.io surrealdb-core: affected < 2.1.0; fixed in 2.1.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io surrealdb: check the installed version with your package manager. - crates.io surrealdb-core: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on surrealdb, surrealdb-core. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-jc55-246c-r88f (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-jc55-246c-r88f lists affected ranges: crates.io surrealdb >=0 =0 <2.1.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
