Symfony vulnerable to command execution hijack on Windows with Process class

CVE-2024-51736GHSA-qq5c-677p-737q

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (symfony/symfony 7.1.7, 6.4.14, 5.4.46; symfony/process 7.1.7, 6.4.14, 5.4.46), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Description On Windows, when an executable file named cmd.exe is located in the current working directory it will be called by the Process class when preparing command arguments, leading to possible hijacking. Resolution The Process class now uses the absolute path to cmd.exe. The patch for this issue is available here for branch 5.4. Credits We would like to thank Jordi Boggiano for reporting the issue and Nicolas Grekas for providing the fix.

IDs: CVE-2024-51736, GHSA-qq5c-677p-737q
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-51736 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:30 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.6)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: symfony/symfony 7.1.7, 6.4.14, 5.4.46; symfony/process 7.1.7, 6.4.14, 5.4.46. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Packagist symfony/symfony: affected < 5.4.46; >= 6.0.0, < 6.4.14; >= 7.0.0, < 7.1.7; fixed in 5.4.46, 6.4.14, 7.1.7
- Packagist symfony/process: affected < 5.4.46; >= 6.0.0, < 6.4.14; >= 7.0.0, < 7.1.7; fixed in 5.4.46, 6.4.14, 7.1.7

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Packagist symfony/symfony: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Packagist symfony/process: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on symfony/symfony, symfony/process.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
