Butterfly has path/URL confusion in resource handling leading to multiple weaknesses

CVE-2024-47883GHSA-3p8v-w8mr-m3x8

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.openrefine.dependencies:butterfly 1.2.6), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary The Butterfly framework uses the java.net.URL class to refer to (what are expected to be) local resource files, like images or templates. This works: "opening a connection" to these URLs opens the local file. However, if a file:/ URL is directly given where a relative path (resource name) is expected, this is also accepted in some code paths; the app then fetches the file, from a remote machine if indicated, and uses it as if it was a trusted part of the app's codebase. This leads to multiple weaknesses and potential weaknesses: An attacker that has network access to the application could use it to gain access to files, either on the the server's filesystem (path traversal) or shared by nearby machines (server-side request forgery with e.g. SMB). An attacker that can lead or redirect a user to a crafted URL belonging to the app could cause arbitrary attacker-controlled JavaScript to be loaded in the victim's browser (cross-site scripting). If an app is written in such a way…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-47883

Advisory: Butterfly has path/URL confusion in resource handling leading to multiple weaknesses
IDs: CVE-2024-47883, GHSA-3p8v-w8mr-m3x8
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-47883 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:31 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.openrefine.dependencies:butterfly 1.2.6. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven org.openrefine.dependencies:butterfly: affected < 1.2.6; fixed in 1.2.6

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven org.openrefine.dependencies:butterfly: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on org.openrefine.dependencies:butterfly.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-3p8v-w8mr-m3x8 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-3p8v-w8mr-m3x8 lists affected ranges: Maven org.openrefine.dependencies:butterfly >=0 <1.2.6)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
