Argo Workflows Controller: Denial of Service via malicious daemon Workflows

CVE-2024-47827GHSA-ghjw-32xw-ffwr

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/v3 3.6.0-rc2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary Due to a race condition in a global variable, the argo workflows controller can be made to crash on-command by any user with access to execute a workflow. This was resolved by https://github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/pull/13641 Details These two lines introduce a data race in the underlying SPDY implementation of the Kubernetes API client. If a second request is made before the first completes, it results in a panic due to a null pointer. https://github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/blob/ce7f9bfb9b45f009b3e85fabe5e6410de23c7c5f/workflow/metrics/metricsk8srequest.go#L49 https://github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/blob/ce7f9bfb9b45f009b3e85fabe5e6410de23c7c5f/workflow/metrics/metricsk8srequest.go#L75 This appears to have been added in this commit https://github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/commit/9756babd0ed589d1cd24592f05725f748f74130b / #13265 / v3.6.0-rc1 PoC With the KUBECONFIG variable set to an appropriate file with create permissions for the Workflow kind, execute the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-47827

Advisory: Argo Workflows Controller: Denial of Service via malicious daemon Workflows
IDs: CVE-2024-47827, GHSA-ghjw-32xw-ffwr
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-47827 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:14 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.9)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/v3 3.6.0-rc2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/v3: affected >= 3.6.0-rc1, <= 3.6.0-rc1; fixed in 3.6.0-rc2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/v3: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/v3.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-ghjw-32xw-ffwr (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-ghjw-32xw-ffwr lists affected ranges: Go github.com/argoproj/argo-workflows/v3 >=3.6.0-rc1 <=3.6.0-rc1)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
