Matrix JavaScript SDK's key history sharing could share keys to malicious devices

CVE-2024-47080GHSA-4jf8-g8wp-cx7c

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (matrix-js-sdk 34.8.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact In matrix-js-sdk versions 9.11.0 through 34.7.0, the method MatrixClient.sendSharedHistoryKeys is vulnerable to interception by malicious homeservers. The method implements functionality proposed in MSC3061 and can be used by clients to share historical message keys with newly invited users, granting them access to past messages in the room. However, it unconditionally sends these "shared" keys to all of the invited user's devices, regardless of whether the user's cryptographic identity is verified or whether the user's devices are signed by that identity. This allows the attacker to potentially inject its own devices to receive sensitive historical keys without proper security checks. Note that this only affects clients running the SDK with the legacy crypto stack. Clients using the new Rust cryptography stack (i.e. those that call MatrixClient.initRustCrypto() instead of MatrixClient.initCrypto()) are unaffected by this vulnerability, because…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-47080

Advisory: Matrix JavaScript SDK's key history sharing could share keys to malicious devices
IDs: CVE-2024-47080, GHSA-4jf8-g8wp-cx7c
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-47080 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:31 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: matrix-js-sdk 34.8.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- npm matrix-js-sdk: affected >= 9.11.0, < 34.8.0; fixed in 34.8.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `npm ls matrix-js-sdk --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on matrix-js-sdk.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
