HTTP client can manipulate custom HTTP headers that are added by Traefik

CVE-2024-45410GHSA-62c8-mh53-4cqv

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/traefik/traefik/v3 3.1.3; github.com/traefik/traefik/v2 2.11.9; github.com/traefik/traefik 2.11.9), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact There is a vulnerability in Traefik that allows the client to remove the X-Forwarded headers (except the header X-Forwarded-For). Patches - https://github.com/traefik/traefik/releases/tag/v2.11.9 - https://github.com/traefik/traefik/releases/tag/v3.1.3 Workarounds No workaround. For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory, please open an issue. <details <summaryOriginal Description</summary Summary When a HTTP request is processed by Traefik, certain HTTP headers such as X-Forwarded-Host or X-Forwarded-Port are added by Traefik before the request is routed to the application. For a HTTP client, it should not be possible to remove or modify these headers. Since the application trusts the value of these headers, security implications might arise, if they can be modified. For HTTP/1.1, however, it was found that some of theses custom headers can indeed be removed and in certain cases manipulated. The attack relies on the HTTP/1.1 behavior, that…

Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/traefik/traefik/v3 3.1.3; github.com/traefik/traefik/v2 2.11.9; github.com/traefik/traefik 2.11.9. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/traefik/traefik/v3: affected >= 3.0.0-beta3, < 3.1.3; fixed in 3.1.3
- Go github.com/traefik/traefik/v2: affected < 2.11.9; fixed in 2.11.9
- Go github.com/traefik/traefik: affected < 2.11.9; fixed in 2.11.9

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/traefik/traefik/v3: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Go github.com/traefik/traefik/v2: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Go github.com/traefik/traefik: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/traefik/traefik/v3, github.com/traefik/traefik/v2, github.com/traefik/traefik.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
