gix-path improperly resolves configuration path reported by Git

CVE-2024-45405GHSA-m8rp-vv92-46c7

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (gix-path 0.10.11), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Affected packages

  • crates.io gix-path

    Affected

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary gix-path runs git to find the path of a configuration file associated with the git installation, but improperly resolves paths containing unusual or non-ASCII characters, in rare cases enabling a local attacker to inject configuration leading to code execution. Details In gixpath::env, the underlying implementation of the installationconfig and installationconfigprefix functions calls git config -l --show-origin to find the path of a file to treat as belonging to the git installation. Affected versions of gix-path do not pass -z/--null to cause git to report literal paths (650a1b5). Instead, to cover the occasional case that git outputs a quoted path, they attempt to parse the path by stripping the quotation marks: https://github.com/Byron/gitoxide/blob/1cfe577d461293879e91538dbc4bbfe01722e1e8/gix-path/src/env/git/mod.rs#L138-L142 The problem is that, when a path is quoted, it may change in substantial ways beyond the concatenation of quotation marks. If not reversed, these…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-45405

Advisory: gix-path improperly resolves configuration path reported by Git
IDs: CVE-2024-45405, GHSA-m8rp-vv92-46c7
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-45405 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: gix-path 0.10.11. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io gix-path: affected <= 0.10.10; fixed in 0.10.11

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io gix-path: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on gix-path.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-m8rp-vv92-46c7 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-m8rp-vv92-46c7 lists affected ranges: crates.io gix-path >=0 <=0.10.10)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
