gix-path uses local config across repos when it is the highest scope

CVE-2024-45305GHSA-v26r-4c9c-h3j6

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (gix-path 0.10.10), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary gix-path executes git to find the path of a configuration file that belongs to the git installation itself, but mistakenly treats the local repository's configuration as system-wide if no higher scoped configuration is found. In rare cases, this causes a less trusted repository to be treated as more trusted, or leaks sensitive information from one repository to another, such as sending credentials to another repository's remote. Details In gixpath::env, the underlying implementation of the installationconfig and installationconfigprefix functions calls git config -l --show-origin and parses the first line of the output to extract the path to the configuration file holding the configuration variable of highest scope: https://github.com/Byron/gitoxide/blob/12251eb052df30105538fa831e641eea557f13d8/gix-path/src/env/git/mod.rs#L91 https://github.com/Byron/gitoxide/blob/12251eb052df30105538fa831e641eea557f13d8/gix-path/src/env/git/mod.rs#L112 While the configuration variable of…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-45305

Advisory: gix-path uses local config across repos when it is the highest scope
IDs: CVE-2024-45305, GHSA-v26r-4c9c-h3j6
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-45305 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Low (CVSS 2.0)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: gix-path 0.10.10. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io gix-path: affected < 0.10.10; fixed in 0.10.10

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io gix-path: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on gix-path.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-v26r-4c9c-h3j6 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-v26r-4c9c-h3j6 lists affected ranges: crates.io gix-path >=0 <0.10.10)
