Chisel's AUTH environment variable not respected in server entrypoint
CVE-2024-43798GHSA-38jh-8h67-m7mj
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/jpillora/chisel 1.10.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

Summary The Chisel server doesn't ever read the documented AUTH environment variable used to set credentials, which allows any unauthenticated user to connect, even if credentials were set. This advisory is a formalization of a report sent to the maintainer via email. Details In the help page for the chisel server subcommand, it mentions an AUTH environment variable that can be set in order to provide credentials that the server should authenticate connections against: https://github.com/jpillora/chisel/blob/3de177432cd23db58e57f376b62ad497cc10840f/main.go#L138. The issue is that the server entrypoint doesn't ever read the AUTH environment variable. The only place that this happens is in the client entrypoint: https://github.com/jpillora/chisel/blob/3de177432cd23db58e57f376b62ad497cc10840f/main.go#L452 This subverts the expectations set by the documentation, allowing unauthenticated users to connect to a Chisel server, even if auth is attempted to be set up in this manner. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-43798 Advisory: Chisel's AUTH environment variable not respected in server entrypoint IDs: CVE-2024-43798, GHSA-38jh-8h67-m7mj Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-43798 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:05 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/jpillora/chisel 1.10.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go github.com/jpillora/chisel: affected < 1.10.0; fixed in 1.10.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go github.com/jpillora/chisel: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on github.com/jpillora/chisel. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-38jh-8h67-m7mj (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-38jh-8h67-m7mj lists affected ranges: Go github.com/jpillora/chisel >=0 <1.10.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
