Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
An issue was discovered in OpenStack Cinder through 24.0.0, Glance before 28.0.2, and Nova before 29.0.3. Arbitrary file access can occur via custom QCOW2 external data. By supplying a crafted QCOW2 image that references a specific data file path, an authenticated user may convince systems to return a copy of that file's contents from the server, resulting in unauthorized access to potentially sensitive data. All Cinder and Nova deployments are affected; only Glance deployments with image conversion enabled are affected.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-32498 Advisory: OpenStack Cinder, Glance, and Nova vulnerable to arbitrary file access IDs: CVE-2024-32498, GHSA-r4v4-w9pv-6fph Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-32498 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:35 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.1) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI nova: affected <= 29.0.2 - PyPI glance: affected <= 28.0.1 - PyPI cinder: affected <= 24.0.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show nova`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. - `python -m pip show glance`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. - `python -m pip show cinder`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on nova, glance, cinder. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-r4v4-w9pv-6fph (OSV record GHSA-r4v4-w9pv-6fph lists affected ranges: PyPI cinder >=0 =0 =0 <=29.0.2) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-r4v4-w9pv-6fph (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-r4v4-w9pv-6fph lists affected ranges: PyPI cinder >=0 =0 =0 <=29.0.2) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
