Argo CD's API server does not enforce project sourceNamespaces

CVE-2024-31990GHSA-2gvw-w6fj-7m3c

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.10.7, 2.9.12, 2.8.16), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact I can convince the UI to let me do things with an invalid Application. 1. Admin gives me p, michael, applications, , demo/, allow, where demo can just deploy to the demo namespace 2. Admin gives me AppProject dev which reconciles from ns dev-apps 3. Admin gives me p, michael, applications, sync, dev/, allow, i.e. no updating via the UI allowed, gitops-only 4. I create an Application called pwn in dev-apps with project dev and sync the app with sources from git 5. I change the Application’s project to demo via kubectl or gitops (whichever mechanism my admins have given me, because it should be safe) 6. I use the UI to edit the resource which should only be mutable via gitops Patches A patch for this vulnerability has been released in the following Argo CD versions: v2.10.7 v2.9.12 v2.8.16 For more information If you have any questions or comments about this advisory: Open an issue in the Argo CD issue tracker or discussions Join us on Slack in channel #argo-cd Credits This…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-31990

Advisory: Argo CD's API server does not enforce project sourceNamespaces
IDs: CVE-2024-31990, GHSA-2gvw-w6fj-7m3c
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-31990 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:03 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 4.8)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.10.7, 2.9.12, 2.8.16. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: affected >= 2.4.0, < 2.8.16; >= 2.9.0, < 2.9.12; >= 2.10.0, < 2.10.7; fixed in 2.8.16, 2.9.12, 2.10.7

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
