DNSJava DNSSEC Bypass
CVE-2024-25638GHSA-cfxw-4h78-h7fw
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (dnsjava:dnsjava 3.6.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary Records in DNS replies are not checked for their relevance to the query, allowing an attacker to respond with RRs from different zones. Details DNS Messages are not authenticated. They do not guarantee that - received RRs are authentic - not received RRs do not exist - all or any received records in a response relate to the request Applications utilizing DNSSEC generally expect these guarantees to be met, however DNSSEC by itself only guarantees the first two. To meet the third guarantee, resolvers generally follow an (undocumented, as far as RFCs go) algorithm such as: (simplified, e.g. lacks DNSSEC validation!) 1. denote by QNAME the name you are querying (e.g. fraunhofer.de.), and initialize a list of aliases 2. if the ANSWER section contains a valid PTR RRSet for QNAME, return it (and optionally return the list of aliases as well) 3. if the ANSWER section contains a valid CNAME RRSet for QNAME, add it to the list of aliases. Set QNAME to the CNAME's target and go to 2. 4.…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-25638 Advisory: DNSJava DNSSEC Bypass IDs: CVE-2024-25638, GHSA-cfxw-4h78-h7fw Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-25638 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:30 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.0) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: dnsjava:dnsjava 3.6.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven dnsjava:dnsjava: affected < 3.6.0; fixed in 3.6.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven dnsjava:dnsjava: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on dnsjava:dnsjava. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-cfxw-4h78-h7fw (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-cfxw-4h78-h7fw lists affected ranges: Maven dnsjava:dnsjava >=0 <3.6.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
