Untrusted search path under some conditions on Windows allows arbitrary code execution

CVE-2024-22190GHSA-2mqj-m65w-jghx

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (gitpython 3.1.41), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Summary This issue exists because of an incomplete fix for CVE-2023-40590. On Windows, GitPython uses an untrusted search path if it uses a shell to run git, as well as when it runs bash.exe to interpret hooks. If either of those features are used on Windows, a malicious git.exe or bash.exe may be run from an untrusted repository. Details Although GitPython often avoids executing programs found in an untrusted search path since 3.1.33, two situations remain where this still occurs. Either can allow arbitrary code execution under some circumstances. When a shell is used GitPython can be told to run git commands through a shell rather than as direct subprocesses, by passing shell=True to any method that accepts it, or by both setting Git.USESHELL = True and not passing shell=False. Then the Windows cmd.exe shell process performs the path search, and GitPython does not prevent that shell from finding and running git in the current directory. When GitPython runs git directly rather than…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-22190

Advisory: Untrusted search path under some conditions on Windows allows arbitrary code execution
IDs: CVE-2024-22190, GHSA-2mqj-m65w-jghx
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-22190 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:17 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.6)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: gitpython 3.1.41. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI gitpython: affected < 3.1.41; fixed in 3.1.41

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show gitpython`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on gitpython.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
