Bypassing Brute Force Protection via Application Crash and In-Memory Data Loss

CVE-2024-21652GHSA-x32m-mvfj-52xv

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.10.4, 2.9.9, 2.8.13), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary An attacker can exploit a chain of vulnerabilities, including a Denial of Service (DoS) flaw and in-memory data storage weakness, to effectively bypass the application's brute force login protection. This makes the application susceptible to brute force attacks, compromising the security of all user accounts. Details The issue arises from two main vulnerabilities: 1. The application crashes due to a previously described DoS vulnerability caused by unsafe array modifications in a multi-threaded environment. 2. The application saves the data of failed login attempts in-memory, without persistent storage. When the application crashes and restarts, this data is lost, resetting the brute force protections. By chaining these vulnerabilities, an attacker can circumvent the limitations placed on the number of login attempts. PoC 1. Run the provided PoC script. 2. Observe that the script makes 6 login attempts, one more than the set limit of 5 failed attempts. 3. This is made possible…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-21652

Advisory: Bypassing Brute Force Protection via Application Crash and In-Memory Data Loss
IDs: CVE-2024-21652, GHSA-x32m-mvfj-52xv
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-21652 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:08 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.10.4, 2.9.9, 2.8.13. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: affected < 2.8.13; >= 2.9.0, < 2.9.9; >= 2.10.0, < 2.10.4; fixed in 2.9.9, 2.8.13, 2.10.4

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
