Undertow Uncontrolled Resource Consumption Vulnerability
CVE-2024-1635GHSA-w6qf-42m7-vh68
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (io.undertow:undertow-core 2.3.12.Final, 2.2.31.Final), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
A vulnerability was found in Undertow. This vulnerability impacts a server that supports the wildfly-http-client protocol. Whenever a malicious user opens and closes a connection with the HTTP port of the server and then closes the connection immediately, the server will end with both memory and open file limits exhausted at some point, depending on the amount of memory available. At HTTP upgrade to remoting, the WriteTimeoutStreamSinkConduit leaks connections if RemotingConnection is closed by Remoting ServerConnectionOpenListener. Because the remoting connection originates in Undertow as part of the HTTP upgrade, there is an external layer to the remoting connection. This connection is unaware of the outermost layer when closing the connection during the connection opening procedure. Hence, the Undertow WriteTimeoutStreamSinkConduit is not notified of the closed connection in this scenario. Because WriteTimeoutStreamSinkConduit creates a timeout task, the whole dependency tree…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2024-1635 Advisory: Undertow Uncontrolled Resource Consumption Vulnerability IDs: CVE-2024-1635, GHSA-w6qf-42m7-vh68 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2024-1635 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:44 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: io.undertow:undertow-core 2.3.12.Final, 2.2.31.Final. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven io.undertow:undertow-core: affected >= 2.3.0.Final, < 2.3.12.Final; < 2.2.31.Final; fixed in 2.3.12.Final, 2.2.31.Final ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven io.undertow:undertow-core: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on io.undertow:undertow-core. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-w6qf-42m7-vh68 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-w6qf-42m7-vh68 lists affected ranges: Maven io.undertow:undertow-core >=2.3.0.Final =0 <2.2.31.Final) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
