PocketMine-MP vulnerable to improperly checked dropped item count leading to server crash

CVE-2023-7332GHSA-h87r-f4vc-mchv

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (pocketmine/pocketmine-mp 4.18.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact In 4.18.0, the network handling of inventories was completely revamped. Due to this, a bug was introduced which allowed players to request that the server drop more of an item than they had available in their hotbar. This did not lead to any duplication issues, but instead led to a server crash, and is believed to have been exploited in the wild. Patches This was fixed in 58974765a68f63a9968a7ff3a06f584ff2ee08d2, which was released in 4.18.1. Workarounds Handle InventoryTransactionPacket in DataPacketReceiveEvent, and verify that the item count dropped isn't more than the available item count. However, it's complicated to do this, so it's not recommended.

## Affected components
- Packagist pocketmine/pocketmine-mp: affected < 4.18.1; fixed in 4.18.1

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Packagist pocketmine/pocketmine-mp: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on pocketmine/pocketmine-mp.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
