Download to arbitrary folder can lead to RCE
CVE-2023-47890GHSA-h73m-pcfw-25h2
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (pyload-ng 0.5.0b3.dev75), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Summary A web UI user can store files anywhere on the pyLoad server and gain command execution by abusing scripts. Details When a user creates a new package, a subdirectory is created within the /downloads folder to store files. This new directory name is derived from the package name, except a filter is applied to make sure it can't traverse directories and stays within /downloads. src/pyload/core/api/init.py::addpackage::L432 So if a package were created with the name the application would instead create the folder However, when editing packages there is no prevention in place and a user can just pick any arbitrary directory in the filesystem. src/pyload/webui/app/blueprints/jsonblueprint.py::editpackage::L195 Steps to reproduce 1. Login to a pyLoad instance 2. Go to "Queue" and create a new package with any name and a valid link 3. Click "Edit Package" on the newly created package and set the folder as "/config/scripts/downloadfinished/" 4. Restart the package 5. Check the server…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-47890 Advisory: Download to arbitrary folder can lead to RCE IDs: CVE-2023-47890, GHSA-h73m-pcfw-25h2 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-47890 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:12 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.6) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: pyload-ng 0.5.0b3.dev75. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI pyload-ng: affected < 0.5.0b3.dev75; fixed in 0.5.0b3.dev75 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show pyload-ng`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on pyload-ng. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-h73m-pcfw-25h2 (OSV record GHSA-h73m-pcfw-25h2 lists affected ranges: PyPI pyload-ng >=0 <0.5.0b3.dev75 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-h73m-pcfw-25h2 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-h73m-pcfw-25h2 lists affected ranges: PyPI pyload-ng >=0 <0.5.0b3.dev75) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
