Apache Storm Local Information Disclosure Vulnerability in Storm-core on Unix-Like systems due temporary files
CVE-2023-43123GHSA-85p4-q357-72h9
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.apache.storm:storm-core 2.6.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
On unix-like systems, the temporary directory is shared between all user. As such, writing to this directory using APIs that do not explicitly set the file/directory permissions can lead to information disclosure. Of note, this does not impact modern MacOS Operating Systems. The method File.createTempFile on unix-like systems creates a file with predefined name (so easily identifiable) and by default will create this file with the permissions -rw-r--r--. Thus, if sensitive information is written to this file, other local users can read this information. File.createTempFile(String, String) will create a temporary file in the system temporary directory if the 'java.io.tmpdir' system property is not explicitly set. This affects the class https://github.com/apache/storm/blob/master/storm-core/src/jvm/org/apache/storm/utils/TopologySpoutLag.java#L99 and was introduced by https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/STORM-3123 In practice, this has a very limited impact as this class is used only…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-43123 Advisory: Apache Storm Local Information Disclosure Vulnerability in Storm-core on Unix-Like systems due temporary files IDs: CVE-2023-43123, GHSA-85p4-q357-72h9 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-43123 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:35 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.apache.storm:storm-core 2.6.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven org.apache.storm:storm-core: affected >= 2.0.0, < 2.6.0; fixed in 2.6.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven org.apache.storm:storm-core: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on org.apache.storm:storm-core. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-85p4-q357-72h9 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-85p4-q357-72h9 lists affected ranges: Maven org.apache.storm:storm-core >=2.0.0 <2.6.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
