Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Impact In Argo CD versions prior to 2.3 (starting at least in v0.1.0, but likely in any version using Helm before 2.3), using a specifically-crafted Helm file could reference external Helm charts handled by the same repo-server to leak values, or files from the referenced Helm Chart. This was possible because Helm paths were predictable. The vulnerability worked by adding a Helm chart that referenced Helm resources from predictable paths. Because the paths of Helm charts were predictable and available on an instance of repo-server, it was possible to reference and then render the values and resources from other existing Helm charts regardless of permissions. While generally, secrets are not stored in these files, it was nevertheless possible to reference any values from these charts. Patches This issue was fixed in Argo CD 2.3 and subsequent versions by randomizing Helm paths. Workarounds User's still using Argo CD 2.3 or below are advised to update to a supported version. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-40026 Advisory: Path traversal allows leaking out-of-bound Helm charts from Argo CD repo-server IDs: CVE-2023-40026, GHSA-6jqw-jwf5-rp8h Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-40026 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:00 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.0) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Partial vendor fix; fixed versions by package: github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.3.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: affected < 2.3.0; fixed in 2.3.0 - Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd: affected <= 1.8.7 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: check the installed version with your package manager. - Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2, github.com/argoproj/argo-cd. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-6jqw-jwf5-rp8h (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-6jqw-jwf5-rp8h lists affected ranges: Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd >=0 =0 <2.3.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
