XWiki Platform privilege escalation (PR)/RCE from account through Invitation subject/message

CVE-2023-37914GHSA-7954-6m9q-gpvf

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-invitation-ui 15.2-rc-1, 14.10.6, 14.4.8), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

This can be reproduced with the following steps: 1. Open the invitation application (Invitation.WebHome). 1. Set the subject to {{cache}}{{groovy}}new File("/tmp/exploit.txt").withWriter { out - out.println("Attacked from invitation!"); }{{/groovy}}{{/cache}} 1. Click "Preview" Patches The vulnerability has been patched on XWiki 14.4.8, 15.2-rc-1, and 14.10.6. Workarounds The vulnerability can be patched manually by applying the patch on Invitation.InvitationCommon and Invitation.InvitationConfig. Advisory: XWiki Platform privilege escalation (PR)/RCE from account through Invitation subject/message
IDs: CVE-2023-37914, GHSA-7954-6m9q-gpvf
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-37914 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:19 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.9)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-invitation-ui 15.2-rc-1, 14.10.6, 14.4.8. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-invitation-ui: affected >= 2.5-m-1, < 14.4.8; >= 14.5, < 14.10.6; >= 15.0-rc-1, < 15.2-rc-1; fixed in 15.2-rc-1, 14.10.6, 14.4.8

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-invitation-ui: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-invitation-ui.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
