org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml's HTML sanitizer allows form elements in restricted
CVE-2023-36471GHSA-6pqf-c99p-758v
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml 15.2-rc-1, 14.10.6), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Impact The HTML sanitizer that is included in XWiki since version 14.6RC1 allowed form and input HTML tags. In the context of XWiki, this allows an attacker without script right to either create forms that can be used for phishing attacks or also in the context of a sheet, the attacker could add an input like {{html}}<input type="hidden" name="content" value="{{groovy}}println("Hello from Groovy!")" /{{/html}} that would allow remote code execution when it is submitted by an admin (the sheet is rendered as part of the edit form). The attacker would need to ensure that the edit form looks plausible, though, which can be non-trivial as without script right the attacker cannot display the regular content of the document. Patches This has been patched in XWiki 14.10.6 and 15.2RC1 by removing the central form-related tags from the list of allowed tags. Workarounds An admin can manually disallow the tags by adding form, input, select, textarea, button to the configuration option…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-36471 Advisory: org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml's HTML sanitizer allows form elements in restricted IDs: CVE-2023-36471, GHSA-6pqf-c99p-758v Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-36471 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:16 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.0) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml 15.2-rc-1, 14.10.6. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml: affected >= 14.6-rc-1, < 14.10.6; >= 15.0-rc-1, < 15.2-rc-1; fixed in 15.2-rc-1, 14.10.6 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-6pqf-c99p-758v (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-6pqf-c99p-758v lists affected ranges: Maven org.xwiki.commons:xwiki-commons-xml >=14.6-rc-1 =15.0-rc-1 <15.2-rc-1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
