Rancher permissions on 'namespaces' in any API group grants 'edit' permissions on namespaces in 'core'
CVE-2023-32194GHSA-c85r-fwc7-45vc
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/rancher/rancher 2.8.2, 2.7.10, 2.6.14), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Impact A vulnerability has been identified when granting a create or global role for a resource type of "namespaces"; no matter the API group, the subject will receive permissions for core namespaces. This can lead to someone being capable of accessing, creating, updating, or deleting a namespace in the project. This includes reading or updating a namespace in the project so that it is available in other projects in which the user has the "manage-namespaces" permission or updating another namespace in which the user has normal "update" permissions to be moved into the project. The expected behavior is to not be able to create, update, or delete a namespace in the project or move another namespace into the project since the user doesn't have any permissions on namespaces in the core API group. Moving a namespace to another project could lead to leakage of secrets, in case the targeted project has secrets. And also can lead to the namespace being able to abuse the resource quotas of…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-32194 Advisory: Rancher permissions on 'namespaces' in any API group grants 'edit' permissions on namespaces in 'core' IDs: CVE-2023-32194, GHSA-c85r-fwc7-45vc Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-32194 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:09 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.6) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/rancher/rancher 2.8.2, 2.7.10, 2.6.14. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go github.com/rancher/rancher: affected >= 2.6.0, < 2.6.14; >= 2.7.0, < 2.7.10; >= 2.8.0, < 2.8.2; fixed in 2.7.10, 2.6.14, 2.8.2 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go github.com/rancher/rancher: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on github.com/rancher/rancher. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-c85r-fwc7-45vc (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-c85r-fwc7-45vc lists affected ranges: Go github.com/rancher/rancher >=2.6.0 =2.7.0 =2.8.0 <2.8.2) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
