Undefined Behavior in Rust runtime functions
CVE-2023-30624GHSA-ch89-5g45-qwc7
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (wasmtime 8.0.1, 7.0.1, 6.0.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Impact Wasmtime's implementation of managing per-instance state, such as tables and memories, contains LLVM-level undefined behavior. This undefined behavior was found to cause runtime-level issues when compiled with LLVM 16 which causes some writes, which are critical for correctness, to be optimized away. Vulnerable versions of Wasmtime compiled with Rust 1.70, which is currently in beta, or later are known to have incorrectly compiled functions. Versions of Wasmtime compiled with the current Rust stable release, 1.69, and prior are not known at this time to have any issues, but can theoretically exhibit potential issues. The underlying problem is that Wasmtime's runtime state for an instance involves a Rust-defined structure called Instance which has a trailing VMContext structure after it. This VMContext structure has a runtime-defined layout that is unique per-module. This representation cannot be expressed with safe code in Rust so unsafe code is required to maintain this…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-30624 Advisory: Undefined Behavior in Rust runtime functions IDs: CVE-2023-30624, GHSA-ch89-5g45-qwc7 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-30624 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Low (CVSS 3.9) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: wasmtime 8.0.1, 7.0.1, 6.0.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io wasmtime: affected < 6.0.2; >= 7.0.0, < 7.0.1; >= 8.0.0, < 8.0.1; fixed in 7.0.1, 8.0.1, 6.0.2 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io wasmtime: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on wasmtime. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-ch89-5g45-qwc7 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-ch89-5g45-qwc7 lists affected ranges: crates.io wasmtime >=0 =7.0.0 =8.0.0 <8.0.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
