Unrestricted file upload in kiwi TCMS

CVE-2023-30613GHSA-fwcf-753v-fgcj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (kiwitcms 12.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact Kiwi TCMS allows users to upload attachments to test plans, test cases, etc. In earlier versions there is no control over what kinds of files can be uploaded. Thus a malicious actor may upload an .exe file or a file containing embedded JavaScript and trick others into clicking on these files causing vulnerable browsers to execute malicious code on another computer or attempting XSS attacks. Stored XSS attacks via file uploads have been fixed in earlier versions of Kiwi TCMS, see GHSA-2wcr-87wf-cf9j. This advisory deals with prohibiting users to upload potentially compromised files in the first place. Patches Kiwi TCMS v12.2 comes with functionality that allows administrators to configure additional upload validator functions which give them more control over what file types are accepted for upload. By default .exe are denied. Other files containing the <script tag, regardless of their type are also denied b/c they are a path to XSS attacks. Workarounds Upgrade to version 12.2…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-30613

Advisory: Unrestricted file upload in kiwi TCMS
IDs: CVE-2023-30613, GHSA-fwcf-753v-fgcj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-30613 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:31 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: kiwitcms 12.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI kiwitcms: affected < 12.2; fixed in 12.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show kiwitcms`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on kiwitcms.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
