XWiki Platform vulnerable to data leak via Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference
CVE-2023-27480GHSA-gx4f-976g-7g6v
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-xar-model 14.10-rc-1, 14.4.7, 13.10.11), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Impact Any user with edit rights on a document can trigger a XAR import on a forged XAR file, leading to the ability to display the content of any file on the XWiki server host. Example to reproduce: Create a forget XAR file and inside it, have the following package.xml content: Upload it onto a wiki page (e.g. XXE) as an attachment (e.g. test.xar). Call the page using http://localhost:8080/xwiki/bin/view/Main/XXE?sheet=XWiki.AdminImportSheet&file=test.xar You'll then notice that the displayed UI contains the content of the /etc/passwd file. Patches The vulnerability has been patched in XWiki 13.10.11, 14.4.7 and 14.10-rc-1. Workarounds You'd need to get XWiki Platform sources and apply the changes from https://github.com/xwiki/xwiki-platform/commit/e3527b98fdd8dc8179c24dc55e662b2c55199434 to the XarPackage java class and then copy the modified version to your WEB-INF/classes directory (or rebuild the xwiki-platform-xar-model maven module and replace the one found in WEB-INF/lib/).…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-27480 Advisory: XWiki Platform vulnerable to data leak via Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference IDs: CVE-2023-27480, GHSA-gx4f-976g-7g6v Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-27480 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:11 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.7) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-xar-model 14.10-rc-1, 14.4.7, 13.10.11. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-xar-model: affected >= 1.1-milestone-3, < 13.10.11; >= 14.0, < 14.4.7; >= 14.5, < 14.10-rc-1; fixed in 14.4.7, 13.10.11, 14.10-rc-1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-xar-model: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-xar-model. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-gx4f-976g-7g6v (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-gx4f-976g-7g6v lists affected ranges: Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-xar-model >=1.1-milestone-3 =14.0 =14.5 <14.10-rc-1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
