xwiki-platform vulnerable to Remote Code Execution in Annotations

CVE-2023-26475GHSA-h6f5-8jj5-cxhr

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-annotation-ui 14.10, 14.4.7, 13.10.11), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact The annotation displayer does not execute the content in a restricted context. This allows executing anything with the right of the author of any document by annotating the document. To reproduce: add an annotation with the content {{groovy}}print "hello"{{/groovy}} and click the yellow scare to get a display of the annotation inline. The result is "hello" but it should be an error suggesting that it's not allowed to use the groovy macro. Patches This has been patched in XWiki 13.10.11, 14.4.7 and 14.10. Workarounds There is no easy workaround except to upgrade. # Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-26475

Advisory: xwiki-platform vulnerable to Remote Code Execution in Annotations
IDs: CVE-2023-26475, GHSA-h6f5-8jj5-cxhr
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-26475 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:11 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.9)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-annotation-ui 14.10, 14.4.7, 13.10.11. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-annotation-ui: affected >= 2.3-milestone-1, < 13.10.11; >= 14.0-rc-1, < 14.4.7; >= 14.5, < 14.10; fixed in 14.10, 14.4.7, 13.10.11

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-annotation-ui: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on org.xwiki.platform:xwiki-platform-annotation-ui.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
