Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
The Kademlia DHT (go-libp2p-kad-dht 0.20.0 and earlier) used in IPFS (0.18.1 and earlier) assigns routing information for content (i.e., information about who holds the content) to be stored by peers whose peer IDs have a small DHT distance from the content ID. This allows an attacker to censor content by generating many Sybil peers whose peer IDs have a small distance from the content ID, thus hijacking the content resolution process.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-26248 Advisory: Content Censorship in the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) via Kademlia DHT abuse IDs: CVE-2023-26248, GHSA-mqr9-hjr8-2m9w Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-26248 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:08 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor response not established. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go github.com/libp2p/go-libp2p-kad-dht: affected <= 0.20.0 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go github.com/libp2p/go-libp2p-kad-dht: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action No complete vendor fix is recorded. Follow the primary source's mitigation guidance and check this record again before closing anything. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on github.com/libp2p/go-libp2p-kad-dht. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-mqr9-hjr8-2m9w (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-mqr9-hjr8-2m9w lists affected ranges: Go github.com/libp2p/go-libp2p-kad-dht >=0 <=0.20.0) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
