Grafana Stored Cross-site Scripting in Graphite FunctionDescription tooltip

CVE-2023-1410GHSA-qrrg-gw7w-vp76

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/grafana/grafana 9.4.7, 9.3.11, 9.2.15, 8.5.22), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Summary When a Graphite data source is added, one can use this data source in a dashboard. This contains a feature to use Functions. Once a function is selected, a small tooltip will be shown when hovering over the name of the function. This tooltip will allow you to delete the selected Function from your query or show the Function Description. However, no sanitization is done when adding this description to the DOM. Since it is not uncommon to connect to public data sources, and attacker could host a Graphite instance with modified Function Descriptions containing XSS payloads. When the victim uses it in a query and accidentally hovers over the Function Description, an attacker controlled XSS payload will be executed. This can be used to add the attacker as an Admin for example. Details 1. Spin up your own Graphite instance. I've done this using the make devenv sources=graphite. 2. Now start a terminal for your Graphite container and modify the following file…

IDs: CVE-2023-1410, GHSA-qrrg-gw7w-vp76
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-1410 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:55 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 6.2)

Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/grafana/grafana 9.4.7, 9.3.11, 9.2.15, 8.5.22. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/grafana/grafana: affected >= 8.0.0, < 8.5.22; >= 9.3.0, < 9.3.11; >= 9.4.0, < 9.4.7; >= 9.0.0, < 9.2.15; fixed in 9.4.7, 8.5.22, 9.3.11, 9.2.15

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/grafana/grafana: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/grafana/grafana.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
