openssl-src contains NULL dereference during PKCS7 data verification
CVE-2023-0401GHSA-vrh7-x64v-7vxq
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (openssl-src 300.0.12), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
A NULL pointer can be dereferenced when signatures are being verified on PKCS7 signed or signedAndEnveloped data. In case the hash algorithm used for the signature is known to the OpenSSL library but the implementation of the hash algorithm is not available the digest initialization will fail. There is a missing check for the return value from the initialization function which later leads to invalid usage of the digest API most likely leading to a crash. The unavailability of an algorithm can be caused by using FIPS enabled configuration of providers or more commonly by not loading the legacy provider. PKCS7 data is processed by the SMIME library calls and also by the time stamp (TS) library calls. The TLS implementation in OpenSSL does not call these functions however third party applications would be affected if they call these functions to verify signatures on untrusted data.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-0401 Advisory: openssl-src contains `NULL` dereference during PKCS7 data verification IDs: CVE-2023-0401, GHSA-vrh7-x64v-7vxq Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-0401 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:39 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: openssl-src 300.0.12. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io openssl-src: affected >= 300.0.0, < 300.0.12; fixed in 300.0.12 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io openssl-src: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on openssl-src. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-vrh7-x64v-7vxq (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-vrh7-x64v-7vxq lists affected ranges: crates.io openssl-src >=300.0.0 <300.0.12) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
