Velociraptor subject to Path Traversal
CVE-2023-0290GHSA-7jf5-fvgf-48c6
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (www.velocidex.com/golang/velociraptor 0.6.7-5), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Rapid7 Velociraptor did not properly sanitize the client ID parameter to the CreateCollection API, allowing a directory traversal in where the collection task could be written. It was possible to provide a client id of "../clients/server" to schedule the collection for the server (as a server artifact), but only require privileges to schedule collections on the client. Normally, to schedule an artifact on the server, the COLLECTSERVER permission is required. This permission is normally only granted to "administrator" role. Due to this issue, it is sufficient to have the COLLECTCLIENT privilege, which is normally granted to the "investigator" role. To exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must already have a Velociraptor user account at least "investigator" level, and be able to authenticate to the GUI and issue an API call to the backend. Typically, most users deploy Velociraptor with limited access to a trusted group, and most users will already be administrators within the GUI.…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2023-0290 Advisory: Velociraptor subject to Path Traversal IDs: CVE-2023-0290, GHSA-7jf5-fvgf-48c6 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2023-0290 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:58 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 4.3) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: www.velocidex.com/golang/velociraptor 0.6.7-5. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - Go www.velocidex.com/golang/velociraptor: affected < 0.6.7-5; fixed in 0.6.7-5 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - Go www.velocidex.com/golang/velociraptor: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on www.velocidex.com/golang/velociraptor. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-7jf5-fvgf-48c6 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-7jf5-fvgf-48c6 lists affected ranges: Go www.velocidex.com/golang/velociraptor >=0 <0.6.7-5) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
