Grafana Spoofing originalUrl of snapshots

CVE-2022-39324GHSA-4724-7jwc-3fpw

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/grafana/grafana 9.2.8, 8.5.16), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

To create a snapshot (and insert an arbitrary URL) the built-in role Viewer is sufficient. When a dashboard is shared as a local snapshot, the following three fields are offered in the web UI for a user to fill out: • Snapshotname • Expire • Timeout(seconds) After the user confirms creation of the snapshot (i.e. clicks the ”Local Snapshot” button) an HTTP POST request is sent to the Grafana server. The HTTP request contains additional parameters that are not visible in the web UI. The parameter originalUrl is not visible in the web UI, but sent in the HTTP POST request. The value of the originalUrl parameter is automatically generated. The purpose of the presented originalUrl parameter is to provide a user that views the snapshot the possibility to click on the button in the Grafana web UI and be presented with the dashboard that the snapshot was made out of. The value of the originalUrl parameter can be arbitrarily chosen by a malicious user that creates the snapshot (Note: by…

Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/grafana/grafana 9.2.8, 8.5.16. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/grafana/grafana: affected >= 9.0.0, < 9.2.8; < 8.5.16; fixed in 8.5.16, 9.2.8

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/grafana/grafana: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/grafana/grafana.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-4724-7jwc-3fpw (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-4724-7jwc-3fpw lists affected ranges: Go github.com/grafana/grafana >=9.0.0 =0 <8.5.16)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
