Improper Validation of Integrity Check Value in go-tuf

CVE-2022-29173GHSA-66x3-6cw3-v5gj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/theupdateframework/go-tuf 0.3.0), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact go-tuf does not correctly implement the client workflow for updating the metadata files for roles other than the root role. Specifically, checks for rollback attacks are not implemented correctly meaning an attacker can cause clients to install software that is older than the software which the client previously knew to be available, and may include software with known vulnerabilities. In more detail, the client code of go-tuf has several issues in regards to preventing rollback attacks: 1. It does not take into account the content of any previously trusted metadata, if available, before proceeding with updating roles other than the root role (i.e., steps 5.4.3.1 and 5.5.5 of the detailed client workflow). This means that any form of version verification done on the newly-downloaded metadata is made using the default value of zero, which always passes. 1. For both timestamp and snapshot roles, go-tuf saves these metadata files as trusted before verifying if the version of the…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2022-29173

Advisory: Improper Validation of Integrity Check Value in go-tuf
IDs: CVE-2022-29173, GHSA-66x3-6cw3-v5gj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2022-29173 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:55 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.0)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/theupdateframework/go-tuf 0.3.0. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/theupdateframework/go-tuf: affected < 0.3.0; fixed in 0.3.0

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/theupdateframework/go-tuf: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/theupdateframework/go-tuf.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
