Argo CD will blindly trust JWT claims if anonymous access is enabled

CVE-2022-29165GHSA-r642-gv9p-2wjj

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.3.4, 2.2.9, 2.1.15; github.com/argoproj/argo-cd 2.1.15), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact A critical vulnerability has been discovered in Argo CD which would allow unauthenticated users to impersonate as any Argo CD user or role, including the admin user, by sending a specifically crafted JSON Web Token (JWT) along with the request. In order for this vulnerability to be exploited, anonymous access to the Argo CD instance must have been enabled. In a default Argo CD installation, anonymous access is disabled. To find out if anonymous access is enabled in your instance, please see the Workarounds section of this advisory below. The vulnerability can be exploited to impersonate as any user or role, including the built-in admin account regardless of whether that account is enabled or disabled. Also, the attacker does not need an account on the Argo CD instance in order to exploit this. If anonymous access to the instance is enabled, an attacker can: Escalate their privileges, effectively allowing them to gain the same privileges on the cluster as the Argo CD instance,…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2022-29165

Advisory: Argo CD will blindly trust JWT claims if anonymous access is enabled
IDs: CVE-2022-29165, GHSA-r642-gv9p-2wjj
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2022-29165 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 14:54 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 10.0)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.3.4, 2.2.9, 2.1.15; github.com/argoproj/argo-cd 2.1.15. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: affected >= 2.3.0, < 2.3.4; >= 2.2.0, < 2.2.9; < 2.1.15; fixed in 2.3.4, 2.1.15, 2.2.9
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd: affected <= 1.8.7; fixed in 2.1.15

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2, github.com/argoproj/argo-cd.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
