Use after free in Wasmtime

CVE-2022-24791GHSA-gwc9-348x-qwv2

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (wasmtime 0.35.2, 0.34.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Affected packages

  • crates.io wasmtime

    Affected
    < 0.34.2>= 0.35.0, < 0.35.2
    Fixed in

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

There is a use after free vulnerability in Wasmtime when both running Wasm that uses externrefs and enabling epoch interruption in Wasmtime. If you are not explicitly enabling epoch interruption (it is disabled by default) then you are not affected. If you are explicitly disabling the Wasm reference types proposal (it is enabled by default) then you are also not affected. The use after free is caused by Cranelift failing to emit stack maps when there are safepoints inside cold blocks. Cold blocks occur when epoch interruption is enabled. Cold blocks are emitted at the end of compiled functions, and change the order blocks are emitted versus defined. This reordering accidentally caused Cranelift to skip emitting some stack maps because it expected to emit the stack maps in block definition order, rather than block emission order. When Wasmtime would eventually collect garbage, it would fail to find live references on the stack because of the missing stack maps, think that they were…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2022-24791

Advisory: Use after free in Wasmtime
IDs: CVE-2022-24791, GHSA-gwc9-348x-qwv2
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2022-24791 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:38 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 8.1)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: wasmtime 0.35.2, 0.34.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- crates.io wasmtime: affected < 0.34.2; >= 0.35.0, < 0.35.2; fixed in 0.34.2, 0.35.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- crates.io wasmtime: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on wasmtime.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-gwc9-348x-qwv2 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-gwc9-348x-qwv2 lists affected ranges: crates.io wasmtime >=0 =0.35.0 <0.35.2)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
