Path traversal and dereference of symlinks in Argo CD

CVE-2022-24348GHSA-63qx-x74g-jcr7

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.2.4, 2.1.9; github.com/argoproj/argo-cd 2.1.9), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Impact All versions of Argo CD are vulnerable to a path traversal bug that allows to pass arbitrary values files to be consumed by Helm charts. Additionally, it is possible to craft special Helm chart packages containing value files that are actually symbolic links, pointing to arbitrary files outside the repository's root directory. If an attacker with permissions to create or update Applications knows or can guess the full path to a file containing valid YAML, they can create a malicious Helm chart to consume that YAML as values files, thereby gaining access to data they would otherwise have no access to. The impact can especially become critical in environments that make use of encrypted value files (e.g. using plugins with git-crypt or SOPS) containing sensitive or confidential data, and decrypt these secrets to disk before rendering the Helm chart. Also, because any error message from helm template is passed back to the user, and these error messages are quite verbose,…

IDs: CVE-2022-24348, GHSA-63qx-x74g-jcr7
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2022-24348 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:04 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.7)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2 2.2.4, 2.1.9; github.com/argoproj/argo-cd 2.1.9. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: affected < 2.1.9; >= 2.2.0, < 2.2.4; fixed in 2.2.4, 2.1.9
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd: affected < 2.1.9; fixed in 2.1.9

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Go github.com/argoproj/argo-cd: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/v2, github.com/argoproj/argo-cd.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
