Improper Access Control in Onionshare

CVE-2022-21691GHSA-w9m4-7w72-r766

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (onionshare-cli 2.5), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

Between September 26, 2021 and October 8, 2021, Radically Open Security conducted a penetration test of OnionShare 2.4, funded by the Open Technology Fund's Red Team lab. This is an issue from that penetration test. - Vulnerability ID: OTF-004 - Vulnerability type: Improper Access Control - Threat level: Moderate Description: Chat participants can spoof their channel leave message, tricking others into assuming they left the chatroom. Technical description: This series of screenshots show Alice, Bob and Eve joined a chatroom and are the only participants in the chatroom. Eve seemingly leaves the chatroom, which leads Bob and Alice to believe they are having a private chat. The last screenshot shows that Eve only emitted the leave message and is still able to read the chat and possibly write messages. This can be reproduced by joining the chat with two different instances, where one instance has slightly modified the client-side JavaScript code similar to OTF-003 (page 22). The joined…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2022-21691

Advisory: Improper Access Control in Onionshare
IDs: CVE-2022-21691, GHSA-w9m4-7w72-r766
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2022-21691 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 13:21 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.3)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: onionshare-cli 2.5. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- PyPI onionshare-cli: affected >= 2.3, < 2.5; fixed in 2.5

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- `python -m pip show onionshare-cli`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on onionshare-cli.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
