Improper certificate management in AWS IoT Device SDK v2
CVE-2021-40828GHSA-94jq-q5v2-76wj
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (awsiotsdk 1.5.18; software.amazon.awssdk.iotdevicesdk:aws-iot-device-sdk 1.3.3; aws-iot-device-sdk-v2 1.5.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Connections initialized by the AWS IoT Device SDK v2 for Java (versions prior to 1.3.3), Python (versions prior to 1.5.18), C++ (versions prior to 1.12.7) and Node.js (versions prior to 1.5.1) did not verify server certificate hostname during TLS handshake when overriding Certificate Authorities (CA) in their trust stores on Windows. This issue has been addressed in aws-c-io submodule versions 0.9.13 onward. This issue affects: Amazon Web Services AWS IoT Device SDK v2 for Java versions prior to 1.3.3 on Microsoft Windows. Amazon Web Services AWS IoT Device SDK v2 for Python versions prior to 1.5.18 on Microsoft Windows. Amazon Web Services AWS IoT Device SDK v2 for C++ versions prior to 1.12.7 on Microsoft Windows. Amazon Web Services AWS IoT Device SDK v2 for Node.js versions prior to 1.5.3 on Microsoft Windows.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2021-40828 Advisory: Improper certificate management in AWS IoT Device SDK v2 IDs: CVE-2021-40828, GHSA-94jq-q5v2-76wj Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2021-40828 (revision 3, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:31 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Medium (CVSS 5.4) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: awsiotsdk 1.5.18; software.amazon.awssdk.iotdevicesdk:aws-iot-device-sdk 1.3.3; aws-iot-device-sdk-v2 1.5.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - PyPI awsiotsdk: affected < 1.5.18; fixed in 1.5.18 - Maven software.amazon.awssdk.iotdevicesdk:aws-iot-device-sdk: affected < 1.3.3; fixed in 1.3.3 - npm aws-iot-device-sdk-v2: affected < 1.5.1; fixed in 1.5.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `python -m pip show awsiotsdk`: prints the installed version. Run with the environment that serves production active. - Maven software.amazon.awssdk.iotdevicesdk:aws-iot-device-sdk: check the installed version with your package manager. - `npm ls aws-iot-device-sdk-v2 --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on awsiotsdk, software.amazon.awssdk.iotdevicesdk:aws-iot-device-sdk, aws-iot-device-sdk-v2. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-94jq-q5v2-76wj (OSV record GHSA-94jq-q5v2-76wj lists affected ranges: Maven software.amazon.awssdk.iotdevicesdk:aws-iot-device-sdk >=0 =0 =0 <1.5.18 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-94jq-q5v2-76wj (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-94jq-q5v2-76wj lists affected ranges: Maven software.amazon.awssdk.iotdevicesdk:aws-iot-device-sdk >=0 =0 =0 <1.5.18) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
