UNIX Symbolic Link (Symlink) Following in @npmcli/arborist
CVE-2021-39135GHSA-gmw6-94gg-2rc2
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (@npmcli/arborist 2.8.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Impact Arbitrary File Creation, Arbitrary File Overwrite, Arbitrary Code Execution @npmcli/arborist, the library that calculates dependency trees and manages the nodemodules folder hierarchy for the npm command line interface, aims to guarantee that package dependency contracts will be met, and the extraction of package contents will always be performed into the expected folder. This is accomplished by extracting package contents into a project's nodemodules folder. If the nodemodules folder of the root project or any of its dependencies is somehow replaced with a symbolic link, it could allow Arborist to write package dependencies to any arbitrary location on the file system. Note that symbolic links contained within package artifact contents are filtered out, so another means of creating a nodemodules symbolic link would have to be employed. 1. A preinstall script could replace nodemodules with a symlink. (This is prevented by using --ignore-scripts.) 2. An attacker could supply…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2021-39135 Advisory: UNIX Symbolic Link (Symlink) Following in @npmcli/arborist IDs: CVE-2021-39135, GHSA-gmw6-94gg-2rc2 Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2021-39135 (revision 2, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 12:36 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 8.2) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: @npmcli/arborist 2.8.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - npm @npmcli/arborist: affected < 2.8.2; fixed in 2.8.2 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - `npm ls @npmcli/arborist --all`: lists every installed copy and version, including transitive ones. Run in the project root after `npm ci`. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on @npmcli/arborist. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://osv.dev/vulnerability/GHSA-gmw6-94gg-2rc2 (OSV record GHSA-gmw6-94gg-2rc2 lists affected ranges: npm @npmcli/arborist >=0 <2.8.2 (fixed)) - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-gmw6-94gg-2rc2 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-gmw6-94gg-2rc2 lists affected ranges: npm @npmcli/arborist >=0 <2.8.2) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
