HTTP Request Smuggling in actix-http
CVE-2021-38512GHSA-8928-2fgm-6x9x
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (actix-http 2.2.1), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
Affected versions of this crate did not properly detect invalid requests that could allow HTTP/1 request smuggling (HRS) attacks when running alongside a vulnerable front-end proxy server. This can result in leaked internal and/or user data, including credentials, when the front-end proxy is also vulnerable. Popular front-end proxies and load balancers already mitigate HRS attacks so it is recommended that they are also kept up to date; check your specific set up. You should upgrade even if the front-end proxy receives exclusively HTTP/2 traffic and connects to the back-end using HTTP/1; several downgrade attacks are known that can also expose HRS vulnerabilities.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2021-38512 Advisory: HTTP Request Smuggling in actix-http IDs: CVE-2021-38512, GHSA-8928-2fgm-6x9x Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2021-38512 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:33 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: High (CVSS 7.5) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: actix-http 2.2.1. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - crates.io actix-http: affected < 2.2.1; fixed in 2.2.1 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - crates.io actix-http: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on actix-http. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-8928-2fgm-6x9x (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-8928-2fgm-6x9x lists affected ranges: crates.io actix-http >=0 <2.2.1) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
