Multiple vulnerabilities allow bypassing path filtering of agent-to-controller access control in Jenkins

CVE-2021-21692GHSA-8xg4-xq2v-v6j7

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.jenkins-ci.main:jenkins-core 2.319, 2.303.3), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

The agent-to-controller security subsystem limits which files on the Jenkins controller can be accessed by agent processes. Multiple vulnerabilities in the file path filtering implementation of Jenkins 2.318 and earlier, LTS 2.303.2 and earlier allow agent processes to read and write arbitrary files on the Jenkins controller file system, and obtain some information about Jenkins controller file systems. SECURITY-2538 / CVE-2021-21692: The operations FilePath#renameTo and FilePath#moveAllChildrenTo only check read permission on the source path. We expect that most of these vulnerabilities have been present since SECURITY-144 was addressed in the 2014-10-30 security advisory. Jenkins 2.319, LTS 2.303.3 addresses these security vulnerabilities. SECURITY-2538 / CVE-2021-21692: The operations FilePath#renameTo and FilePath#moveAllChildrenTo check both read and delete permissions on the source path. As some common operations are now newly subject to access control, it is expected that…

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2021-21692

Advisory: Multiple vulnerabilities allow bypassing path filtering of agent-to-controller access control in Jenkins
IDs: CVE-2021-21692, GHSA-8xg4-xq2v-v6j7
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2021-21692 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:21 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.0)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.jenkins-ci.main:jenkins-core 2.319, 2.303.3. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven org.jenkins-ci.main:jenkins-core: affected >= 2.304, <= 2.318; <= 2.303.2; fixed in 2.319, 2.303.3

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven org.jenkins-ci.main:jenkins-core: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on org.jenkins-ci.main:jenkins-core.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.

## Sources
- Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-8xg4-xq2v-v6j7 (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-8xg4-xq2v-v6j7 lists affected ranges: Maven org.jenkins-ci.main:jenkins-core >=2.304 =0 <=2.303.2)

Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
