Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory in Fabric8 Kubernetes Client

CVE-2021-20218GHSA-jwh2-ffg4-48xc

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (io.fabric8:kubernetes-client 5.0.2, 4.13.2, 4.11.2, 4.7.2), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

A flaw was found in the fabric8 kubernetes-client in version 4.2.0 and after. This flaw allows a malicious pod/container to cause applications using the fabric8 kubernetes-client copy command to extract files outside the working path. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to integrity and system availability. This has been fixed in kubernetes-client-4.13.2 kubernetes-client-5.0.2 kubernetes-client-4.11.2 kubernetes-client-4.7.2

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2021-20218

Advisory: Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory in Fabric8 Kubernetes Client
IDs: CVE-2021-20218, GHSA-jwh2-ffg4-48xc
Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2021-20218 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 16:00 UTC)
Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected.
Severity: High (CVSS 7.4)
Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV.
Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: io.fabric8:kubernetes-client 5.0.2, 4.13.2, 4.11.2, 4.7.2. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven io.fabric8:kubernetes-client: affected >= 4.2.0, <= 4.7.1; >= 4.8.0, <= 4.11.1; >= 4.12.0, <= 4.13.1; >= 5.0.0, <= 5.0.1; fixed in 4.11.2, 4.13.2, 4.7.2, 5.0.2

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven io.fabric8:kubernetes-client: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on io.fabric8:kubernetes-client.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
