Nokogiri Command Injection Vulnerability
CVE-2019-5477GHSA-cr5j-953j-xw5p
What to do
Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (nokogiri 1.10.4; rexical 1.0.7), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.
This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description
As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.
A command injection vulnerability in Nokogiri v1.10.3 and earlier allows commands to be executed in a subprocess via Ruby's Kernel.open method. Processes are vulnerable only if the undocumented method Nokogiri::CSS::Tokenizer#loadfile is being called with unsafe user input as the filename. This vulnerability appears in code generated by the Rexical gem versions v1.0.6 and earlier. Rexical is used by Nokogiri to generate lexical scanner code for parsing CSS queries. The underlying vulnerability was addressed in Rexical v1.0.7 and Nokogiri upgraded to this version of Rexical in Nokogiri v1.10.4.

# Patch Next advisory brief: CVE-2019-5477 Advisory: Nokogiri Command Injection Vulnerability IDs: CVE-2019-5477, GHSA-cr5j-953j-xw5p Record: https://patchnext.com/advisories/cve-2019-5477 (revision 1, source checked 26 Oct 2026, 15:47 UTC) Inventory: none attached. This brief comes from a public page and does not say whether any deployment is affected. Severity: Critical (CVSS 9.8) Exploitation: no confirmed exploitation recorded. Patch Next confirms exploitation only from CISA KEV. Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: nokogiri 1.10.4; rexical 1.0.7. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed. ## Affected components - RubyGems nokogiri: affected < 1.10.4; fixed in 1.10.4 - RubyGems rexical: affected < 1.0.7; fixed in 1.0.7 ## Suggested inspection (read-only) - RubyGems nokogiri: check the installed version with your package manager. - RubyGems rexical: check the installed version with your package manager. ## Supported action Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version. ## Required regression checks - Run the test suite and a production build. - Exercise the features that depend on nokogiri, rexical. - Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed. ## Rollback considerations - Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward. ## Unresolved questions - Which deployments run an affected version? - Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority. - Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production. ## Sources - Verified: https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-cr5j-953j-xw5p (GitHub-reviewed advisory GHSA-cr5j-953j-xw5p lists affected ranges: RubyGems nokogiri >=0 =0 <1.0.7) Commands are suggestions: review each one before running it.
