Improper Authentication in Apache MyFaces

CVE-2010-2057GHSA-4fv4-cq5v-x45m

What to do

Vendor fix available. Upgrade each affected package to the fixed version on its release line (org.apache.myfaces.core:myfaces-impl 2.0.1, 1.2.9, 1.1.8; org.apache.myfaces.shared:myfaces-shared-core 2.0.1, 1.2.9, 1.1.8), redeploy, then verify what is actually installed.

This page has no inventory attached, so it cannot say whether you are affected. A vendor fix is not proof that your deployment is fixed.

Source description

As published by the source; long descriptions are shortened.

shared/util/StateUtils.java in Apache MyFaces 1.1.x before 1.1.8, 1.2.x before 1.2.9, and 2.0.x before 2.0.1 uses an encrypted View State without a Message Authentication Code (MAC), which makes it easier for remote attackers to perform successful modifications of the View State via a padding oracle attack.

Vendor response: Vendor fix available; fixed versions by package: org.apache.myfaces.core:myfaces-impl 2.0.1, 1.2.9, 1.1.8; org.apache.myfaces.shared:myfaces-shared-core 2.0.1, 1.2.9, 1.1.8. A vendor fix does not mean a deployment is fixed.

## Affected components
- Maven org.apache.myfaces.core:myfaces-impl: affected >= 1.1.0, < 1.1.8; >= 1.2.0, < 1.2.9; >= 2.0.0, < 2.0.1; fixed in 2.0.1, 1.2.9, 1.1.8
- Maven org.apache.myfaces.shared:myfaces-shared-core: affected >= 1.1.0, < 1.1.8; >= 1.2.0, < 1.2.9; >= 2.0.0, < 2.0.1; fixed in 2.0.1, 1.2.9, 1.1.8

## Suggested inspection (read-only)
- Maven org.apache.myfaces.core:myfaces-impl: check the installed version with your package manager.
- Maven org.apache.myfaces.shared:myfaces-shared-core: check the installed version with your package manager.

## Supported action
Upgrade each affected component to a fixed version on its release line. For a transitive dependency, upgrade the parent package or add an override or constraint, then regenerate the lockfile. Redeploy every environment that ran an affected version.

## Required regression checks
- Run the test suite and a production build.
- Exercise the features that depend on org.apache.myfaces.core:myfaces-impl, org.apache.myfaces.shared:myfaces-shared-core.
- Repeat the inspection and confirm that only fixed versions remain installed.

## Rollback considerations
- Keep the previous lockfile and deployment artifact. Rolling back reinstates the vulnerable version, so apply any documented mitigation while you fix forward.

## Unresolved questions
- Which deployments run an affected version?
- Exploitation status can change. Check again before lowering the priority.
- Mark the work resolved only after the fixed version is verified in production.
